Two trips to Dubai in 2018 has made me realise that if it was possible to marry a country, Dubai would be the one. If you’re wanting to chat to me then one thing you should know is that this place is the one big topic of conversation you’ll get out of me (don’t say I didn’t warn you). The constant question of when I’m going back was on my mind even throughout both trips because it’s a place where I just feel so at home, despite it being 8000 miles away from the place I actually call home.
Now after you’ve seen Dubai’s most famous and grand attractions such as the the grand seven star Burj Al Arab or the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, there’s nothing better than taking advantage of the one great thing that makes Dubai so appealing to all us holidaymakers…the weather. Both times I was fortunate enough to go last year, the weather stayed between 30 and 35 degrees, hot but not unbearable like I’ve heard its Summers can be. Now you may be staying at a hotel where you’re perfectly content sitting by its pool for the remainder of the trip, but as I stayed with family, a pool was a necessity for cooling off from the blazing sun, so ‘pool days‘ were a big focus of the trip.
Ladies day is a BIG thing in Dubai with some of its finest hotels and party hot spots offering all day entry to their pools, with delicious little nibbles to pick at and free-flowing drinks, so this post is dedicated to some of the pool days I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing, and hopefully by the end of it you’ll know what to expect from them and how much cash you’ll need to splash (HINT: not as much as you think anyway).
Beside Meydan racecourse you’ll find Drai’s, one of Dubai’s hottest places for entertainment, both day and night. A little tricky to find at first but just follow the sound of poolside partying and you’ll soon be stretched out on one of the comfortably large beds soaking up the rays and enjoying the first class service provided by the staff. If you want to turn up the luxury then you can do so by treating yourself to one of the cabanas, equipped with their own Jacuzzis, making you that little bit more ‘VIP‘.
For all your ladies, make sure you mark every Tuesday on the calendar because for just 100AED (around £21) you receive entry to Drai’s, complimentary sun loungers, unlimited drinks and lunch from 12pm till 5pm. The first thing people say to me when I mention Dubai is how expensive it must be, but when you read about deals like this, it’s certainly not as pricey as you think. For £21 you’d be lucky to get two cocktails at some places in the UK so for an all day experience, this is priceless.
With a DJ on site, you’ll be sure to hear some chart topping bangers whilst tucking in to your complimentary lunch, which consisted of some sort of hummus dish, chicken bites and a mini burger, enough to line your stomach for all the alcohol that is constantly flowing throughout the day. After a few drinks when the party starts to come alive, the floats are brought out to the pool for all those ‘instagram worthy‘ pictures (I was guilty of participating in this), and even later into the afternoon live dancers steal the party goers attention, shaking their feathers and putting us all to shame with their moves. My only words to describe Drai’s is that “Las Vegas has officially met Dubai” and that’s from someone who has never ventured out to America. This is the place to go if you’re looking for a party that continues well after the sun goes down.
Located at One and Only Royal Mirage is another Dubai hotspot, Drift, and a place loved by many reality stars on Instagram after having a nosey before my trip. Drift is described as being ‘a bespoke seafront destination where luxury beach chic meets casual simplicity’ and after a recent visit there I can completely agree with this bold but truthful statement.
Upon arrival and parking up the car all 5 of us were taken by buggy to Drift, which was only the start of the five star treatment. One thing I can never get my head around is that anywhere that you go in Dubai you’re made to feel like royalty, when in reality I’m just a ‘wee‘ girl from Scotland who sounds like Shrek. Once dropped off at the seafront location, your Drift experience well and truly begins. The place is absolutely beautiful, with elegant and classy being a few words that sprung to mind. We were lucky enough to grab beds by the pool and staff rushed over to lay towels on our bed, bring us water and fresh fruit, now that’s what you call service.
Entry usually costs 250 AED (around £53) but every Monday and Tuesday you lucky ladies can gain entry to this vibrant place for half the price, 125 AED (around £26), which includes a glass of their signature cocktail ‘Le Rose‘ on arrival. After a dip in the pool, this fruity watermelon cocktail was so refreshing and went down a treat. With the beach right on its doorstep and Dubai’s iconic skyline standing tall in the background, this is a place that must not be missed should you find yourself in Dubai.
Although slightly pricey, lunch was a highlight and you do get what you pay for. We went for the salted fish croquettes which were AMAZING, the selection of Arabic mezze, and the fish tacos, all washed down with a good old Pornstar Martini. The lunch view was like something out of a postcard and truly enjoyable. The only downside is the construction work taking place next door, but hey it’s Dubai, they’re always trying to build bigger and better so this was to be expected. If you’re wanting to walk off your lunch and freshen up then the shower rooms are for you, with all of the latest products to try, and deodorant to keep you smelling beautiful. It’s all the added touches like this that would make you want to repeatedly visit Drift. I’ll be returning here without a doubt on my next trip.
When you mention Dubai, one well known place that you can be sure everyone has heard of is Zero Gravity, but a minutes walk along the beach from this you’ll find Andreeas. This was another one we were taken to by buggy (you can certainly see why people like me would end up getting lazy with this sort of treatment). With the skyscrapers of Dubai Marina in the background and the crystal blue waters of the Arabian sea only a stone throw away, this came to be one of my favourite pool days along with Drift.
The pool stole my heart, with its swim up bar and sun-loungers IN the actual pool, meaning I could work on my tan with a cocktail in hand, all whilst not overheating due to being surrounded by the cool waters of the newly expanded pool.
Andreeas also offers a ladies day on Thursdays and Saturdays from 12pm to 6pm for 125 AED (around £26) which involves pool access, a mixed food platter and unlimited frozen beverages such as daiquiris and margaritas. The food platter was a treat with a mixture of shrimp and grilled chicken skewers, french fries and a little fruit salad on the side, making this well worth the money. This is yet another pool day I’d return to as I’m in love with the in-pool sun loungers and the fact you can get the best of both worlds with the gorgeous pool or the beautiful white sandy beach.
RIVA BEACH CLUB
Last but not least is Riva Beach Club, located on the iconic Palm Jumeirah. Now if you’re looking for picturesque views of the Arabian Gulf, the Burj Al Arab and to see parts of the Palm branching out, then this is the place for you. I’d describe this one as being ‘family-friendly‘ unlike the previously mentioned ones who are for the older generation only. This is one for any occasion, and with it not being overly lively you are guaranteed a relaxing day. With beds by the pool or on the beach, you are spoilt for choice, and staff are on hand to make sure your every need is catered for.
If you’re looking for 50% off then be sure to head down here on a Wednesday to grab yourself a sun-lounger and 3 complimentary drinks for ONLY 55 AED!! (around £11). I couldn’t quite believe the price myself, and for something this cheap I questioned whether this place would be ‘up to much‘, but it is and it was one of the most relaxing pool days of the trip with some gorgeous views of some of Dubai’s most famous features. I stuck to the Passionfruit fizz cocktail, as there’s no better way to start your morning abroad than with some bubbles (they went to my head pretty quickly though, I won’t lie).
You’ll have to get your purse out for lunch as this isn’t included in the deal, but the food on offer will be sure not to disappoint. When there’s a number of items on the menu that catch your eye, the right thing to do is order them all and have a little ‘tapas selection‘ for you all to pick at, so that’s exactly what we done. We ordered the arancini, chicken satay, pitta with a selection of dips, and the prawn caesar salad. This was quickly brought straight to our sun-loungers where we can now officially say ‘we had lunch on the Palm.’
If you’re looking for a pool day that doesn’t break the bank then any of the above would be a good place to start, particularly Riva Beach Club if you’re wanting something a bit more laid back. Drafting this post has made me want nothing more than to be lazing by a pool with a Pornstar Martini in my favourite country again, here’s hoping it’s not too long till I’m back.
